“Clearly presented, easy to follow and, more importantly, highly practical. I love the Happiness Training Plan CD and recommend it to both colleagues and patients” – Dr Mark Daykin, GP.

“Training to be happy? Can it possibly be done? Can listening to a CD actually make us feel more alive, solve our problems and lead to an inner state of joy? It sounds impossible but what wouldn’t we give to be able to do this! The Happiness Training Plan suggests that far from being a random process, we actually have some control over our happiness, health and consciousness. Listening, relaxing and practising is what it takes to bring about profound and far-reaching changes, which help us to tune in to the inner voice of love and the source of our divinity. I have seen people change in this way and know that it can happen.” – Pat Pilkington MBE, Co-Founder, Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formerly Bristol Cancer Help Centre)

“A helpful, practical and easy to follow course for creating more happiness in our lives – it’s nice to find something so down to earth and straightforward which suits the listener” –Liz Igoe, Psychotherapist

“Excellent content that gives you the keys to happiness as well as plenty of tips on making it work for you” – Elizabeth Digby-Firth, CBT Therapist

The Happiness Training Plan

presented by Dr Chris Johnstone and Miriam Akhtar

The Happiness Training Plan is a self-help audio programme based on positive psychology, the science of happiness & wellbeing. The CD is designed to have an anti-depressant effect, to help you raise and recover your well-being. It condenses what is known about increasing happiness into 12 easy-to-follow tracks, which each last around 5 minutes. The strategies draw on scientific research together with the presenters’ own experiences of overcoming depression. The programme was launched at the 2008 University of Bristol Happiness Lectures. In 2012 the CD became available as a downloadable MP3. In 2017 it became download-only.

It is recommended that you listen to the whole CD (just over 1 hour) and then choose 1 or 2 strategies to practise at a time.  We’ve heard of people listening to the tracks on their commute to work, while exercising and walking the dog! A doctor, who recommends the programme to his patients, listens in his car.

The Positive Psychology Foundations are based on the PERMA model of Well-being, that Prof Martin Seligman describes in his book Flourish.  Our model is PERMA+. We’ve added an extra R for Resilience, M for Mindfulness and P for Physical Wellbeing to give a thorough grounding in the most important dimensions in the science of wellbeing. The aim of the weekly webinars (which are all recorded so you can also listen at your leisure) is to give you a foundation in positive psychology and plant practices that can improve the mood and increase your happiness, well-being and quality of life.  The group coaching format will suit those who want to build their personal well-being and coaches, counsellors, therapists & practitioners who want to familiarise themselves with the tools they can pass on to their clients.

“It’s amazing to be in a class where we were all connected from so many different parts of the world and time zones.”

New date for Autumn 2017 – Wednesdays from October 4 to November 22 2017.
Each session is 75 minutes long and includes a mix of new content, discussion, experiential practice and group coaching.

Between 2006 and 2010 the Bristol Happiness Lectures established a reputation for being inspiring events with leading speakers on the science of wellbeing. Developed by Dr Chris Johnstone with the University of Bristol, contributors included Oliver James (2008), Ilona Boniwell (2007), Raj Persaud (2006), Phil Hammond (2010) and Miriam Akhtar (2010). In 2014 the Bristol Happiness Lectures metamorphosed into the Happiness Lectures Online. The subject of the first event was Sustainable Happiness – how to plant, cultivate and grow happiness with staying power with a special guest Mark Williamson from Action for Happiness.

Want to hear the 2015 Happiness Lectures on Love & Purpose? Here’s the link to replay the webinar.Love is a peak experience and our supreme positive emotion, while having a purpose lends a depth to the quality of our lives – a deep sense of meaning and well-being. When the two come together you have the ingredients for a rich and satisfying life which is more than the sum of its parts. It is a happiness with bandwidth. Love and Purpose come together as passion. The engagement of the heart is like the wind in your sails. Love gives you something to act for.
